KOCHI: A 15-day-old baby boy with a congenital heart problem, who was being taken in an ambulance by road from Mangaluru to Thiruvananthapuram (almost 600km away), was admitted to Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Kochi on Tuesday, following the intervention of health minister K K Shylaja as the child’s condition was critical. The baby, son of Sania and Mithah of Kasaragod, was being taken to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology against the advice of doctors at a private hospital in Mangaluru to get him admitted to the nearest hospital empanelled under the Hridyam scheme, the government initiative to support children with congenital heart disease.”The baby has a complex heart disease and is admitted in the ICU on ventilator support. It will take some time to determine when we are going to do the surgery,” said Dr Krishna Kumar, head, department of paediatric cardiology, AIMS.
