TEAM
One team, four disciplines, no handovers.
Cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists, anaesthesiologists, nurses, technologists and social workers function as a single unit rather than as departments passing a child between them. That model is the reason the outcomes hold.
LEADERSHIP

Dr. R. Krishna Kumar
Head and Clinical Professor, Paediatric Cardiology. He built this department from the point when paediatric cardiac care in India barely existed as a specialty, and has since helped shape the field nationally — through training programmes that supply a substantial share of India’s paediatric cardiac workforce, and through sustained advocacy with government and philanthropic bodies on access to care.
He completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, followed by fellowship training in paediatric cardiology at Children’s Hospital Boston between 1994 and 1996.
His clinical work is deliberately broad, shaped by what the population he serves actually needs: echocardiography, catheter intervention and intensive care. His research concerns the epidemiology of heart disease in the developing world and the design of cost-effective strategies for diagnosing and treating paediatric heart disease where resources are limited. He has published over 100 indexed original and review articles.

Clinical Assistant Professor, Paediatric Cardiology
Dr. Navaneetha Sasikumar is an experienced Pediatric Cardiologist with 15 years of expertise in cardiac catheterization and minimally invasive interventions for congenital heart defects and valvular diseases, treating patients from newborns to adults. Trained at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto Congenital Cardiac Centre for Adults, she established a Pediatric Cardiac Interventional Program at a public sector hospital (2017–2020), making effective use of existing resources. At Amrita, she initiated the Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Implantation program, earning solo Medtronic certification in 2022, and launched the MyVal Transcatheter Heart Valve program for native right ventricular outflow tracts in 2024. In 2021, she founded and continues to lead Amrita’s ACHD Clinic in Kochi, the first of its kind in India, and organized the 2023 Amrita ACHD Symposium with significant international participation.
Beyond clinical care, Dr. Sasikumar developed the Smiling Heart App for early detection of critical congenital heart disease, contributes to Kerala’s Hridyam program, and advises the Meghalaya State government on pediatric cardiology to improve child health and reduce infant mortality in underserved areas. She also leads research projects in Pediatric Cardiology and has published in prestigious journals. Her practice is defined by compassionate, personalized care, with a strong emphasis on listening to and supporting patients and their families.

Our support team
Nursing · perfusion · coordination · family support
Behind every consultant is the group that makes continuous care possible: specialist paediatric cardiac nursing, perfusion, clinical pharmacy, infection control, respiratory therapy, nutrition, medical social work, patient education, and round-the-clock translation for out-of-state and international families.

The multiplier
The people this department has put into other hospitals.
India has roughly 120 paediatric cardiac surgeons for a country where 240,000 children are born with a heart defect every year. No single centre can operate its way out of that.
6
Of India’s leading paediatric heart surgeons were trained in this department.
3
Sri Lanka’s first three paediatric cardiologists — the entire founding cohort for the country — trained here.
1st
The first DM Paediatric Cardiology programme in India recognised by the Medical Council of India.
Surgeons from Japan, China and Portugal have been sent here by their own programmes for advanced training. Amrita was also the first among several international sites designated a global training site by Children’s HeartLink.

RESEARCH
The people this department has put into other hospitals.
An ICMR Collaborating Centre of Excellence since 2023 — the first in India in paediatric cardiology — with a dedicated research office and grant-funded projects from ICMR and the Department of Science and Technology.
Output
250+ publications, including 120+ in international peer-reviewed journals
30+ books and book chapters authored or edited by faculty
Annals of Pediatric Cardiology — faculty played a pivotal role in launching the journal
Contextual research designed around low-resource settings, which is why it travels to other low-resource settings
Grant-funded studies
Neurodevelopmental outcomes after infant heart surgery — ICMR-funded. What happens to a child’s development, not just whether she survives.
Post-operative infection after congenital heart surgery in a low-resource setting — ICMR-funded
A lethal genetic cardiovascular disorder in North Kerala — ICMR-funded. The disease was first described by this department’s own cardiologists and geneticists.
